Recently passed PMP exam

Hey folks,
I passed the PMP examination recently and wanted to pass along a few tips that got me through those hard, grind it out hours of preparation. There were lots of up and downs, but focus, persistence, and resilience is the key. The exam is passable, but it is critical to plan your study approach months in advance, similar to planning a project in your line of work. Here are few things that helped me:
• If your planned exam date is at least three months out, I would spend two hours a day during the week and at least three hours a day during the weekend to prepare. This will give you enough time to take practice exams and improve in the areas which are under par.
• Taking regular breaks when needed. Breaking out a 6 hour study day into 3 two-hour periods or 6 one-hour periods is more productive that 1 six-hour period. Studies show your brain can absorb new information when it is in idle mode, so give it a rest from time to time.
• Measure your progress through quizzes and practice exams, in addition, take note of processes that are giving you the most fits. You want to make sure your weak areas are not exposed when you decide to take the final exam.
• Finally, be sure your mind is free of distractions and other stress-inducing factors when studying. However you choose to do this, whether it be more sleep, music, meditation, yoga, you will study better when you’re in a positive mental state.

I wrote a full story of my exam experience which you can read below. Enjoy!

PMI-ACP Exam Changes in 2018

PMI has updated the PMI-ACP exam in 2018. There's a lot of confusion around the changes. However, the good news is that the changes are really minor. Basically, the terminology used in the exam is being updated to align with the new Agile Practice Guide. Read what Mike Griffith, the person who shaped the PMI-ACP certification, and the chair person of the team that developed the Agile Practice Guide has to say on this topic:

Difference between 5th & 6th edition exams

Hello Friends,
Has anyone taken BOTH the 5th & 6th edition exams? Was there a shift in certain types of questions (i.e. formula-based, situational, sequential, Monitoring & Closing, Social Responsibility)? Or if you studied for the 5th edition, but were going to the miss the cutoff date, how was the 6th edition exam different than the 5th edition study material?

Look forward to the discussion!!!

Audit vs Inspection

Hey guys,

Please help me to understand the difference between Audits and Inspections from the PMBOK's point of view.
I googled a lot but still do not understand the difference completely.

Here are the definitions from the PMBOK:

  • An audit is a structured, independent process used to determine if project activities comply with organizational and project policies, processes, and procedures
  • Inspection includes activities such as measuring, examining, and validating to determine whether work and deliverables meet requirements and product acceptance criteria

The only difference I see is that an audit is a more thorough process.

Thank you in advance! :)

What is the difference between Schedule Model and Project Schedule?

Schedule Model is mentioned 58 times in PMBOK Guide, Fifth Edition compared to just 5 times in the Fourth Edition. So, here's a discussion topic for those preparing for PMP and CAPM exams:

What is the difference between Schedule Model and Project Schedule?

Estimate-To-Complete, Estimate-At-Completion, etc

$

I'm studying for the PM division of the architect's licensing exams, and wrestling with the various forecasting techniques for "snapshot" monitoring of the progress of the Project Work Plan:
ETC Estimate-To-Complete
EAC Estimate-At-Completion
EAC Multiplier
Effective Multiplier

Using these metrics involves analyses of how much has been spent on labor to-date, how much is expected to be spent on labor to complete the remainder of the project, how much the total spent on labor at project completion will be, etc. What I don't understand is whether we're always talking about the cost of Direct Labor, or the cost of direct labor with multipliers applied (what I call Factored Labor, as I haven't seen the official term). One of the terms found in equations is NSF Net Service Fee, which is a value that has multipliers applied - it is not a value of direct labor (unless I've badly misinterpreted that). So does that mean that all the terms of the formulas need to be converted to and expressed as labor values with multipliers applied (factored labor)? Terms of direct labor and terms of factored labor don't belong together in the same formula, do they? Summary of my question: are terms of equations for forecasting techniques always in direct labor, or always in factored labor, or a mix of the two?

CPM is the longest path and its duration is the shortest duration to complete the project

$

People often get confused with the statement:

"Critical Path is the longest path through the project network diagram, and it is an estimate of the minimum (shortest) project duration."

On first impression, the statement sounds ambiguous or outright wrong. How can a Critical Path be the longest path and its duration the shortest duration to complete the project?

Let's break it down.

Critical Path is the longest path through the project because that's the only path with no (positive) float / wiggle room. Other (non-critical) paths on the schedule network diagram have (positive) float / wiggle room.

Critical Path duration is also an estimate of the minimum (shortest) duration to complete the project because it's the only path that runs continuously from start to end of the project i.e. it has no float / wiggle room to cut down. Other paths have float / wiggle room, but shortening the other paths will not shorten your project schedule.

The only way to shorten the project schedule is to shorten the Critical Path and that can be done using schedule compression techniques such as Fast-tracking and Crashing.

Hope this brief explanation helps make some sense of the statement.

PMP Mock Questions Difficulty level of EXAMCENTRAL.net as compared to REAL EXAM?

$

HI,

I was preparing for PMP exam and i did a lot of mocks to check if I was ready for the final exam. I was scoring consistently 73-75% but was not touching 80% in any mocks (Oliver Lehmann, SImplilearn, Edwell Mock). I had been going through the wrong answers and trying cover up the deficiencies. I thought I ran out of new free mock exams to test my readiness. Then I found www.examcentral.com mocks.

I am scoring consistently above 90% in examcentral.net mock exams. The questions are short and seem to be easy. I want to know how much is examcentral.com mock test difficulty level as compared to real PMP exam? Anyone has any experience maybe after giving real PMP exam, can advise?

Thanks
